The Hartley family’s story in Barley began in 1833 with William Hartley, the family’s great x3 grandfather. William farmed Pendle House and later expanded his stewardship to Overhouses, Higher Laithe, and Pike Law. His dedication laid a foundation of hard work and ingenuity that would define the Hartley name for generations to come.
William’s deep agricultural roots were enriched through his mother, Sarah Robinson. Her family also farmed Pendle House, with Sarah’s father, James Robinson (1756–1835), representing another vital link in the chain of custodianship that shaped Barley’s history. Historical accounts even suggest ties to Edmund Robinson, who farmed in Pendle-side in 1780, and the Robinsons of Foot House Gate in the 1600s, indicating an even older lineage deeply connected to the land.
The Robinson family’s connection to the Quaker movement also underscores their significance in the region’s history. In the 17th century, several Robinsons, including Edmund Robinson, were linked to early Quakerism, emphasising values of community, equality, and stewardship that align with the enduring principles of the Hartley family.
