200 Years of Hartley Family Heritage in Barley

Barley, a picturesque village nestled in the shadow of Pendle Hill, has long been home to the Hartley family—a name synonymous with farming, resilience, and community. Over two centuries, the Hartleys have cultivated a profound connection to the land, preserving its beauty while adapting to the evolving challenges of rural life. Today, this remarkable legacy thrives in a new form: Higher Grange Glamping.

The Hartley family’s story in Barley began in 1833 with William Hartley, farming Pendle HouseOverhouses, Higher Laithe, and Pike Law.”

The Hartley family’s story in Barley began in 1833 with William Hartley, the family’s great x3 grandfather. William farmed Pendle House and later expanded his stewardship to Overhouses, Higher Laithe, and Pike Law. His dedication laid a foundation of hard work and ingenuity that would define the Hartley name for generations to come.

William’s deep agricultural roots were enriched through his mother, Sarah Robinson. Her family also farmed Pendle House, with Sarah’s father, James Robinson (1756–1835), representing another vital link in the chain of custodianship that shaped Barley’s history. Historical accounts even suggest ties to Edmund Robinson, who farmed in Pendle-side in 1780, and the Robinsons of Foot House Gate in the 1600s, indicating an even older lineage deeply connected to the land.

The Robinson family’s connection to the Quaker movement also underscores their significance in the region’s history. In the 17th century, several Robinsons, including Edmund Robinson, were linked to early Quakerism, emphasising values of community, equality, and stewardship that align with the enduring principles of the Hartley family. These connections weave a rich tapestry of heritage that speaks to a legacy of faith and resilience.

Adaptation and Innovation Through the Generations

For seven generations, the Hartleys have embraced the land, navigating the challenges of farming life with resilience and ingenuity. From managing herds to crafting the iconic dry stone walls that define the local landscape, the family has embodied the spirit of rural stewardship.

As agricultural practices and economic realities evolved, the Hartleys adapted. Modern pressures, such as shifts in farming economics and the need for diversification, demanded bold solutions. Andrew and Jack Hartley rose to the challenge, envisioning a new future for the family farm. They identified an underused, south-facing area of the property with stunning views of Pendle Hill and began a transformative journey—the creation of Higher Grange Glamping.
